Pine Mountain Trail
Since 1975, volunteers of all ages have labored to build and maintain the Pine Mountain Trail, a 23-mile footpath. The main trail and connecting loops cross and follow the beautiful Pine Mountain ridge in west central Georgia, inside the Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park near Callaway Gardens. Quiet woods, sparkling streams, misty waterfalls, rock outcroppings, varied forest, scenic overlooks, deer and turkey await your discovery. Just follow the blazes (6" by 2 ½" rectangles painted on trees). Two-foot-high rock cairns and mileage markers assist the hiker. Wooden location and mileage signs have been placed at each road crossing, trail head, junction, campsite, and at all named parking lots and trailheads. The Pine Mountain Trail offers clear crisp views of distant ridges in winter, with occasional snowfall. In the summer there are lush green ferns and lowland flowers. Wild flowers are abundant and in spring you will find flowering dogwood, native azalea, mountain laurel and rhododendron. Fall brings bright and beautiful leaves of hickory, oak, dogwood and maple, which change from day to day.
Horseback Riding at FDR State Park
Over 28 miles of marked horse trails, offering guided tours on horseback and trail maps for those who bring their own mounts. Choose from a one hour ride to overnight horse trails for the adventurous and the interested riders. Certified destination by the Girls Scouts Association for earning badges while camping.
Fishing
The Chattahoochee River and Lake Harding form the western border of Harris County, providing ample opportunity for fishing, swimming, boating and other outdoor activities. Lake Harding, a 5,850 acre Georgia Power reservoir, which has 156 miles of shoreline on the Chattahoochee River, draws crowds of boaters and skiers during the summer and offers excellent fishing throughout the whole year.
Blanton Creek Park
Blanton Creek Park is a very popular campground located between Hamilton and West Point on the banks of Lake Harding. Water recreation is abundant with fishing, kayaking and whitewater paddling, and swimming.
